Story :
City Lights starring Charlie Chaplin is a silent romantic comedy with a very touching ending. Chaplin’s Tramp character falls in love with a poor blind flower seller girl, who is under the wrong impression that he is a millionaire. Since Charlie does not want to lose her, he doesn’t tell her the truth. Once, when Charlie saves a drunk millionaire from suicide, they become friends. But the fun is whenever the millionaire is sober, he cannot remember Charlie. And when he is drunk, they are best friends.

The Tramp (Charlie) requires money for the blind girl’s eye operation. So, he tries a lot of things like street sweeping. He also enters a boxing contest. But, still the required money is too much for him. But, once the drunk millionaire casually gives thousand dollars to Charlie. But, when the millionaire is sober, since he cannot remember he thinks Charlie has stolen the money and has him arrested. But just before getting arrested, Charlie gives the money to the girl and lies to her that he is going on a trip. Many months pass by and Charlie get’s released from the jail. Now, the girl is no longer blind and she is looking for Charlie. She only knows (mistakenly) that Charlie who helped her was a millionaire. This ending scene of their meeting is the most touching scene in cinema history. Charlie Chaplin himself was very much fond of this last scene.

Movie Gossip :
Georgia Hale - Charlie’s angel? : Charlie Chaplin was very perfectionist and was used to having many retakes than other directors. Once during filming, he got so upset with the female lead, Virginia Cherrill’s acting that he replaced her with Georgia Hale. But, owing to the film’s budget constraints, he had to revert back to Virginia. The 7 minutes of footage of Charlie and Georgia was not added to the final film, but is still available separately in the DVD version of this film.
